A Night on on the long and winding road tour starts at Anaheim in a barn of a place where Squeeze played some years before, i remembered the catering. When we arrived in the afternoon there was nothing by way of staging, in the parking lot Gary our tour manager and Myles were wallpapering some flats, although its illegal to use wallpaper so they used glue@! All hands were on deck as thrift stores were cleared out so that we could make the stage look like our living room, as we had done last year in the UK. I was knocked out a ‘wifvhin’ cockney, a few hours we had everything all set and ready. The show is in two half and it flew by, the sound was not so good for me but i let in the pool and went with the waves. Glenn played such great guitar, as ever, but more so, the young ish American crowd loved the songs, in a much more way than UK crowds do. Whoops and whistles. The second set was soon in the bag and we were off to the eternal merch stand, a slow one tonight and Glenn was wearing his jet lag face, as was i. A swift hour in the car and I’m back in West Hollywood at my hotel where i ravished a late night club sandwich, it was so huge i had to hide it outside the room, it was embarrassing but it helped me sleep. I think this kind of show does us a great deal of respect, we play the songs and we talk more than we do on a Squeeze show, and they like that. It could be even more relaxed and will be over time. The routine has started and after a few days in my hotel it was good to have a full day with focus. Meanwhile back home the cold winter days have kicked in and poor Lou is lighting fires to keep the barn warm. I go to bed, i call her and she is getting up, i wake up and she is half way through her day, i call her again and she is in bed and I’m on route to the next show, we pass the baton of each day with love. She supports me and without her this tour would be something else completely. The very Odd Couple are off the races, down the long and winding road of this America. In Paris, prayers are ordered for the ones who fell, young lovely innocent people out for a Friday night. Stupid and so very sad.
